Details in this painting
- Blue eyes
- Innocence and witness. She is paying attention, watching what is happening and questioning what she is being told.
- Goggles
- Protection. The protective visual language of the series remains in place even as she looks directly outward.
- Headphones
- Shielding. They remain an attempted layer of protection from the noise around her; her curiosity is what draws her attention toward it.
- Green mark
- Armor and protest. The green element continues the series’ recurring language of protection and resistance.
- Red mark
- What gets through. Disturbing messages, noise and falsehoods can still reach a child despite attempts at protection.
About the Artist
Essebes works across painting, fiber sculpture and mixed media, following an intuitive process in which composition, color and expression develop through the act of making. In the ongoing oil-on-canvas series The Whole World Is Watching, portraiture becomes a way to explore innocence, protection, witnessing and accountability.
